So the election to the European Parliament was yesterday and I think the biggest news was that the swedish pirates-party got c. 7% of the votes and now have a mandate. It's a bit sad to hear the leaders of the two biggest parties talking about this election as a "repetition" for the election to the national parliament next year instead of treating this as a serious election. Even the reporters on TV are saying people think of this as some kind of joke, it is not. An increasing number of laws are founded on decisions made by the EU, the election yesterday (in some countries earlier) is possibly even more important that the national elections.
Another important thing to remember is that when fewer people vote the small extreme parties have a greater chance to enter the parliament. I for one don't want a European Union ruled by xeno- and other-phobic people, we just have to look back 70 years to see how well that went. Our grandparents fought and died so that we could live in a free Europe without wars and xenophobia, it is up to us to keep the EU that way.
The debate that was here in Sweden when IPRED (International Property Rights Enforcement Directive) was going to be implemented earlier this year made it seem as if it was the Swedish government that had made it up, very few media-sources made clear that IPRED came from the EU and that it should have been implemented in April 2006. Yes I think that property rights and integrity on the net are important issues but that debate was far too late to be able to change anything.
For all of you who did not vote yesterday think about it the next time the EU comes up with a directive that needs to be implemented in the member countries and that you don't like. The election is the chance for the european people to influence the EU, take that chance.

So I survived the Christmas and the sometimes vicious attacks from my grandmother's cat... I'm still excited that I passed the huge exam we had before Christmas break I even got a higher grade than I expected to. The biggest change this term will be that I am now a sponsor for some of our exchange students, so far I got two one from Belgium and one from Chile. I haven't met them yet I think... I did talk with some exchange students the other week but I think they were from Germany and Holland. Anyway I'm excited about meeting them and the fact that I might get more students, of course some of those might be Master students so I don't know how much of help I will be but we'll see.

This is to all of you who are currently in Sweden. There is a charity event going on in Malmö for the next five days 24/7, if you are there go to Gustav Adolfs Torg and donate some money to help the 67 million refugees in the world. If you're not in Malmö check the homepage of the Swedish radio on how you can help.
It is a good cause to help people who have lost everything they have and we can help them. I have donated money myself and now I'm urging you to do the same, I know Holland and possibly Belgium will start something similar on the 19th so take your chance.
Anyone not in Sweden who want to see what's going on go to http://www.sr.se/sida/artikel.aspx?Progr

I just walked out of the exam room and I'm still all shaky, mostly because I have to take at least one point on each question to pass. To reach the number of point in total I need to pass is a different thing... I've been writing for the last five hours so I'm kind of exhausted and hungry and cold, it was so damn cold in the room despite the fact that we were over a hundred students writing.
Right now I'm going to wait for my friends, go have something to eat then home and wait three weeks before I know if I passed or not...

I saw Hamlet yesterday, the gloomy/tragic play... it was a birthday present to one of my friends. It was good but I've seen better versions of it, this one was slightly schizophrenic, at least Hamlet and Ophelia made that impression on me. I prefer the production I saw a few years ago, it was easier to understand and believe it or not the audience was actually laughing then (Hamlet isn't as gloomy as people think just read the script)
Anyway I'm busy studying to my exam which isn't until 5 dec but I still have about two/three books I have to read and some of them are stiff boring...

Had a great day today! Today was the "Lawyer Day" at University, which means a lot of Law firms were there to inform us just why we should work for them in the future...and giving away free stuff! So I now have six flash drives on 1GB each, a mountain of pen and pencils, some notebooks, one really nice bag and some other tidbits! More than half of the seats was empty when we had our seminar in the afternoon, I guess people couldn't tear themselves away from the free stuff, for me two hours was about as much as I could take.
The only bad thing was that there were some seminars yesterday that I wanted to attend but couldn't because we had class then okay I could skip if it hadn't been for the fact that I might get called out on an assignment...
That's the great idea of out teachers, some lessons we have to prepare a summary of a case and then some of us will get called out to answer questions and you never know when it's your turn, you get called out four times total.... add to the fact that I had to turn in a bigger paper on monday and that I'm supposed to present it on friday and this and the last weeks been crazy... and way today was great and in the spring there will be the economist days more free stuff YAY!!!

I had the most amazing afternoon yesterday, me and my friends went to watch the finals in the Swedish American football series (yes we do play it here although it's not very popular). Great weather, great public and great game! Mean Machines outclassed the Jets with 70-39!! I am already excited about next season since Mean Machines will be setting up a female team and one of my friends will be playing with them (she is also studying to become a lawyer :-P)

So I'm going to a friends birthday party tomorrow and I still haven't decided what to wear... I'll figure it out tonight. everything is fine but it's so damn cold and they haven't turned on the heat in my block yet so it's not only freezing outside but inside as well, not fun...
I've got a seminar in like 40 minutes, one I really don't want to go to cause the teacher is so boring I almost fell asleep last time but I have to go since this is the only seminar on a particular subject... I rambling now...

So I looked through the paper this morning and noticed a small notice stating that TV4 would send the season premier of Numb3rs tonight (yes Swedish television is a tad late) but when I checked the table it says part 13 of 18... *sigh* and my brother wonders why I'm not watching TV anymore, how can I when they throw the seasons around at whim...

So I've been back at the university for about two weeks and I have already taken one exam, ok I did fail it in the spring so it was a re-take, spent almost 1700 swedish kronor on my literature (I still have five booklets of seminar material to buy), 2200 on my bus card and managed to get a cold. Apart from the cold and the enormous amount of material I have to read everything is fine, the good/bad (I haven't decided yet) thing about this subject is that the exam is in December...
I enjoyed the summer since I went not only to Warsaw but also to Prague where I have never been before. We were there two days but managed to see all the major sights and some minor... wouldn't have made it a third day my feet were hurting because of the paving they use, small very small cobblestones, not so fun...
now I think I'm going to drink something warm and try to get rid of my cold...

I have finished the first year at University and I only have to retake one exam (European Union law) before the fall term begins in August, luckily it's one of the shorter courses only 4 point which equals 4 weeks so I have plenty of time to prepare. Tomorrow I'm leaving for Poland with my family which means I'll have no access to internet for about five weeks but I can live with that.
We're also going to Prague for a couple of days, I'm really excited about that I have never been in Prague but I heard it's beautiful. Anyway I'm back in Sweden in the late July/early August and hopefully I will update this page more frequently during next term, at least I try.
I hope you all will have a wonderful summer, I know I will.

Okay so it's been a while since I wrote but I've been busy with the studies and other things... so the major things that have happened are:
1. I passed the first test I ever wrote at a University and I was so glad because it's so different from any test I've written before
2. The Ball. The law faculty at Stockholm University is celebrating 100 years and this Saturday there was a Ball at the City Hall. I got a ticket. Wee! It was so fun and exiting to see all the students and lawyers (and non-lawyers) all dressed up. I went with a couple of friends but we didn't sit at the same table during the dinner, not that it mattered I had great fun anyway.
It wasn't just the occasion that made it special but also the location. The City Hall is where the Nobel dinner taken place, since we were less than half as many during our dinner we ate where the Prize-takers dance. I'm still in awe of that Hall, it's really beautiful and lives up to the name 'The Golden Hall'.
I got home with aching feet but oh so happy!! I'm still floating around in bliss...

A minute of silence
last week a 16-year old boy was beaten to death by some other 16 year olds... it's just so wrong, I mean they have their entire life before them how can they even think about beating someone so badly?
this, along with another young boy being shot, have caused a lot of reaction's especially here in Stockholm, people are getting sick of the violence amongst the kids, can't say I'm surprised something is seriously wrong when when something like this can happen
the attitude amongst the adults have been that these thing only happen in the "bad" areas but this kid was killed in one of the more popular Stockholm neighborhood, one of the suspects comes from a well known rich family... part of me wonders how their parents could let their kids get so out of hand, don't they keep track of what their kids are doing? then again it's become more important to own the right stuff than socialize with your kids so maybe it shouldn't be such a shock that this could happen... I just hope that everyone will wake up now and realize that something must be done if these things are to be stopped... there was a memorial organized by some pupils from the school the 16 year old went to, almost 10000 persons showed up it's a start
thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of the two boys
